Ludwig Streicher

Ludwig Streicher ( born June 26, 1920 in Vienna, † March 11, 2003 ) was an Austrian double bassist and music educator.

Life

Ludwig Streicher, son of the innkeeper, composer and music teacher Franz Xaver Streicher (1891-1965) in decorative village, studied violin, starting in 1934 at the Vienna Music Academy cello and double bass, and completed his studies in 1940 with a diploma. Subsequently, he was principal double bass player and from 1943 as solo cellist in the Krakow State Orchestra. From 1946 to 1973 Streicher was the first bassist of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Court Orchestra.

From 1966 he taught at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts, after which he took a teaching position in 1992 in Madrid at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía at. He issued a bass method and a number of concert pieces ( transcriptions ) in the music publishing Doblinger and held numerous master classes. He also began an international solo career and went on tours around the world.

Strings used a own bow attitude with which he was able to play even the most difficult pieces of Carl Ditter von Dittersdorf or other compositions of the 18th century with a special expression. Due to his outstanding technique it was called " Paganini of the double bass " or " thousand finger ". Paul Angerer, Gottfried von Einem, Paul Walter Fürst, HK Gruber, Fritz Leitermeyer, Marcel Rubin and Erich Urbanner dedicated works to him.

His grave is located at the Hietzing Cemetery in Vienna (Group 60, Series 1, No. 15).
