Ludwig von Hagn

Ludwig von Hagn, ( born November 23, 1820 in Munich, † January 15, 1898 Munich) was a German painter.

Life

Hagn was the son of businessman Karl von Hagn and his wife Josepha Schwab. The actress Charlotte von Hagn was his sister.

After only recently schooling Hagn changed at the request of his family in the cadet school in his hometown. During a visit in 1840 in Berlin with his sister discovered Hagn for the arts, especially painting. He left the cadet corps and became a pupil of the marine painter Wilhelm Krause. The following year Hagn came back from Berlin to Munich and became a student at the Art Academy. His teachers were there among others, the history painter Clemens von Zimmermann, the lithographer Peter Hess and landscape painter Albert Zimmermann.

1846 Hagn was one of the first Munich painter, who went to Antwerp. He became a student of the Belgian painter Gustave Wappers and Eugène -François de block; latter he later accompanied for several years to Brussels. 1850 Hagn went for three years after Berlin and studied architecture there and also came with the work of Adolph Menzel in touch. This, and his visits to the castles and gardens of Sanssouci brought him the Rococo closer.

The years 1853-1855 spent Hagn in Paris and was interested in there mainly for the works of Léon Cogniet, Paul Delaroche, Juste Aurèle Meissonier and Joseph - Nicolas Robert -Fleury. During this time Hagn also included friendship with his Belgian colleague Florent Willems and Alfred Stevens.

1855 Hagn returned back to Germany and settled in Munich as a freelance painter down. Soon, a small group of artists formed around him, but it was never a "school " of it. There Hagn concluded, inter alia, friendship with Franz Spranger, Victor Muller and August of Pettenkofen.

Between 1863 and 1865 toured Italy Hagn study 's sake. His prolonged stay in Rome brought a departure from the Rococo with it. The history painter Friedrich Pecht designated Hagn as "... the first colorists Munich genre painting ". Through his early work shows Eduard von Grützner than worthy successor to Hagns. As such, Albert could be called from the basement.

At the age of 78 years, Louis died of Hagn on January 15, 1898 in Munich.

Artistic creation Hagns spans a wide berth, from history painting on the genre painting of the Rococo to antikisierenden representations preferably from the 17th century. The contemporary critics raved about, inter alia, of Hagns " poetry of mood " and praised its " harmony of coloring ."
