Lukasrand Tower

The John Vorster Tower (formerly Telkom Lukas Rand Tower ) is a 198 -meter high TV tower in Pretoria, South Africa and at the same time the tallest structure in the city. He is named after the former President of the Republic of South Africa, Balthazar Johannes Vorster, named.

Description

Architecture

The tower shaft of the John Vorster Tower consists of three connected via multiple struts concrete columns with rectangular floor plan. One of these columns ends with the upper hexagonal tower basket, the second extends to the middle and the third to the lower operating level. The middle column of hexagonal base section runs continuously from the ground floor to the top structure. Above the uppermost operating projectile includes a steel antenna from the structure. The tower is not open to the public and was originally 177 meters high.

Football Sculpture

Soccer World Cup 2010 an oversized football dummy was placed in September 2009, below the tower top. This applies to 24 meters in diameter and weighing 50 tons according to the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest football sculpture.
