Luleå University of Technology

The Technical University of Luleå ( Luleå Tekniska schwed. Universitetet, short LTU) in Sweden, is the northernmost university of technology in Scandinavia. As such, it is a member of the University of the Arctic.

The Luleå University of Technology was established on June 1, 1971 under the then name Högskoleenheten i Luleå and was later högskolan i Luleå, even if the name Luleå Tekniska Högskola was often used. She received full university status on 1 January 1997.

The activities of the University have their focus in the technical environment, but also include teacher training, business and other general scientific education and research. The LTU is considered a world leader in the universities, inter alia, tribology and metallurgy.

Pia Sandvik Wiklund In November 2005, took over the post of Rector. Wiklund previously worked at the University of Linköping.

Since its inception, the LTU is on the Porsön peninsula just north of Luleå, but also building in Piteå, Skellefteå, soil and Kiruna. The University of Music and Theatre Academy Piteå Luleå belong to the LTU. The Institute in Skellefteå shares the building with the University of Umeå and the operation in Kiruna universitet with the Swedish Institute of Space Physics and Umeå. In 1999, the nursing college ground was part of the university, which has moved in the course of 2006 to Luleå.

History

The former high school unit in July was founded on 1 July 1971, the first employee was the project manager Rune Andersson. On September 1st of the year, the first training began in the field of mechanical engineering.

During the year 1972, a large part of the geology of the KTH moved to Luleå, because the Swedish mining focus during the 20th century from Bergslagen after Skelleftefältet and Malmfälten has shifted. The mining engineer's training Geotechnology began in the fall of 1972. Professorship in mining technology is Sweden's oldest professorship, which was established in 1819 in Falun.

By the year 1982 six building blocks were built on the Porsön. Since then, only minor extensions were made.

During the 1980s and the 1990s, a number of other technical and general scientific courses were added and the existing teachers and nursing school in Luleå and bottom and the Theatre and Music College were affiliated to the university.

With the new year 1996 to 1997, the University College and changed its name in Luleå Tekniska Universitetet.
