Lunca Cernii de Jos

Lunca Cernii de Jos (deprecated Lunca Cernei de Jos; German Birkesdorf, Hungarian Alsónyiresfalva ) is a municipality in the district of Hunedoara in Transylvania, Romania.

The place is also known by its Hungarian name Nyiresfalva.

Geographical location

The community Lunca Cernii de Jos is located in the Poiana Rusca Mountains, in southwest Transylvania. At the headwaters of the Cerna - a left tributary of the Mureş ( Maros ) - and the county road (Drum Judetean ) DJ 687D located, the place is located 46 kilometers southwest of the city of Hunedoara (Iron market); the district capital Deva ( Deva ) is located 70 kilometers northeast of Lunca Cernii de Jos.

The eingemeindeten villages and hamlets are located approximately 3-9 km from the community center, located on partly unpaved roads. Meria (Hungarian Kekesfalva ), according to tradition, once a den of thieves then a Romanian village of hearing the noble family Mujina, is located at the most remote and difficult to access on a 962 m high-altitude mountain plateau.

About two-thirds of the municipality is forested.

History

The place Lunca Cernii de Jos was first mentioned in documents in 1360. The state finished my village negoiu was until 1950 part of the municipality Răchitova ( Weidensdorf ).

The main occupation of the population is forestry and animal husbandry.

Population

1850 lived on the territory of the present municipality of 1,620 people. 1,611 of these were Romanians and nine were Roma. The highest population ( 4,334 ) - exclusively Romanians - was achieved in 1956. The highest number of Hungary (135) and the Germans ( 51) in 1900, the Roma (17 ) was determined in 1930. In addition, designated in 1890 and 1900, a 22 inhabitants as Slovaks. Most of the Germans in Romania in the field of community were in Lunca Cernii de Sus (Hungarian Felsőnyiresfalva ) 1900 ( 45) registered. From 1966 the number of population decreased dramatically and in 2002 in the town of only 1,116 people (excluding Romania ) were registered.

In the 2011 census, 905 people were counted in 409 households in the community.
