Lycium ferocissimum

Lycium ferocissimum is a plant of the genus Bock mandrels ( Lycium ) in the nightshade family (Solanaceae ).

Description

Lycium ferocissimum is a 2 to 3 m high, stiff, reinforced with spikes shrub. Its leaves are succulent, glabrous and 12 to 24 mm long and 5-7 mm wide.

The flowers are hermaphroditic and fünfzählig. The calyx is tubular, calyx tube has a length of 5 to 7 mm and is filled with 1 to 1.5 mm long, calyx lobes. The crown is white, the venation is purple and the Corolla lobe are pale violet provided with a basal purple point. The base of the stamens is densely pubescent tomentose.

The fruit is a red, broadly ovate or spherical berry that is 8 to 10 mm long and wide.

Occurrence

The species is widespread on the African continent and is there in South Africa in the provinces of Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Free State, KwaZulu -Natal and Mpumalanga, as well as in Morocco, Tunisia, and Lesotho before.

System

Within the goat spines ( Lycium ) the species is according to phylogenetic studies grouped in a clade with other Old World species of the genus. Within this clade, the species is closely related to the species Lycium afrum, Lycium arenicola, Lycium schizocalyx, Lycium cinereum Lycium and horridum.
