Lykourgos Angelopoulos

Lykourgos A. Angelopoulos (Greek Λυκούργος Αγγελόπουλος; * 1941 in Pyrgos ) is a Greek Orthodox church musician, musicologist and choir director of the Greek Byzantine Choir.

Life

Lykourgos A. Angelopoulos was born in 1941 in the small town of Pyrgos, which is located on the Greek peninsula of the Peloponnese.

Study

The church musical career of Lykourgos A. Angelopoulos began with the study of Byzantine music at the Greek school of "National Music " under the direction of Simon Karas. Incidentally Angelopoulos studied law at the Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Activities

1982 Angelopoulos cantor in the first Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St. Irene in Athens. Since 1977, Angelopoulos founder and director of the Greek Byzantine church choir and as a professor in the Department of Byzantine music in the conservatories Nikos Skalkotas and Philippos Nakas in Athens operates.

As director Angelopoulos directs the Byzantine children's choir in the Archdiocese of Athens, since its inception. He serves as director of the schools of Byzantine music in the dioceses Ilia, Rethymno and Fthiotida. For this purpose, Angelopoulos has been working since 1998 as a member of the " Artistic Music Committee ", responsible for the music academies of the Ministry of Education of Greece. From 2005 he was President of the " ΚΣΥΜΕ " / " KSYME " ( The Center for the Study of Contemporary Music ) and is a founding member of the "Charter of Regas ."

Angelopoulos works with the radio program broadcasts at Athens Byzantine music together and led contemporary works of Michalis Adamis, John Tavener, Dimitrios Terzakis, Georgios Kyrakakis, Theodoros Antoniou and Kyriakos Sfetsas on.

International cooperation

Lykourgos A. Angelopoulos worked with the research team of Marcel Pérès from France. The scientific activity in the field of church music is the exploration of the ancient Roman church singing and his influence by the Byzantine church music and their musical relationship. The results are collected, listed and published by the Ensemble Organum, in which Angelopoulos also acts as a cantor. So far Lykourgos A. Angelopoulos involved in eight CD releases which deal primarily with the Byzantine, ancient Roman, ambrosial American and other older Western church chants.

Awards

In 1994 Lykourgos A. Angelopoulos was for his musical achievements by the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, Opel, His Holiness Bartholomew I, with a " Offikion of the Patriarch of Constantinople Opel " ( Archon ) excellent and at the same time appointed to the First cantor in the Archdiocese of Constantinople Opel. In 2004 was made by the Greek President Konstantinos Stephanopoulos being awarded the Order of the Phoenix. Other religious awards received Angelopoulus by the Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Diodorus, the Orthodox Church of Finland, the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Patras. The Holy Synod of Greece honored in 2006 Lykourgos A. Angelopoulos for his church music activities and gave him the golden cross of the Order of the Apostle Paul.
