Lynda Chalker, Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

Lynda Chalker, Baroness Chalker of Wallasey PC (nee Bates born April 29, 1942) is a British Conservative politician who was from 1974 to 1992 member of Parliament for Wallasey. She was Minister of State for Overseas Development ( Minister of State for Overseas Development ) at the Foreign Office in the Conservative government of 1989 until 1997.

Biography

Baroness Chalker led the British delegation which participated in the first TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development ) in October 1993.

She went to the Roedean School in Brighton ( where she was head girl, so head girl ) and then studied at the University of Heidelberg, Queen Mary, University of London and the Polytechnic of Central London. She worked as a statistician and market analyst, at times at Shell -Mex and BP ( a former joint marketing venture between Shell and BP), before it was the successor of the former Minister Ernest Marples MP for Wallasey. She took a series of posts in the government, including as Under Secretary in the Ministry of Health from 1979 to 1982 and in the Ministry of Transport 1982 until 1983.

In 1983 she was Minister of State in the Ministry of Transport, Minister for Europe in 1986. Chalker was in 1992 raised to the peerage as Baroness Chalker life of Wallasey, and thus, after she had lost her seat in the House of Commons at the general election this year, a member of the House of Lords.

Together with Kenneth Clarke, Malcolm Rifkind, Tony Newton and Patrick Mayhew, it is one that has held office for 18 years for the Conservatives to serving the longest British politicians of the 20th century.

The late Lady Diana was a good friend of Baroness Chalker.

After the parliamentary time

In February 2005, Lynda Chalker caused a slight controversy by criticizing Nigeria negative media image and investment climate.

Lynda Chalker was from 1998 to 2007 employed in a managerial position at Unilever, in addition, she was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Merchant International Group and the Africa Board of the Russian Renaissance Capital.

Chalker is a member of the Global Leadership Foundation, an organization that promotes good governance around the world. She is also chairman of the Medicines for Malaria Venture, a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to the aim to alleviate the burden of malaria, and advises of Africa Matters Limited, an independent consulting firm that provides companies in their activities in Africa and support. She is currently board member of the Group of Five and a member of the International Board of Directors of Lafarge et Cie and Merchant Bridge International. Furthermore Chalker has a seat on the Board of Trustees of the Investment Climate Facility for Africa (ICF ), an organization that seeks to eliminate barriers to trade in Africa.
