Lyons-la-Forêt

Lyons- la -Forêt is a municipality with 747 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in northern France in the Eure in the Haute-Normandie region. It is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Geography

Lyons- la -Forêt is located in northern France in the landscape Vexin in the state forest Forêt de Lyons domaniale to the river Lieure, about 34 kilometers east of Rouen.

History

The Celtic coin hoard of Lyons- la -Forêt consists of coins of the Aedui, who were buried around the year 80 BC. The municipality is located in the former area of the Celtic tribe of Veliocasses.

Lyons- la -Forêt was documented in 1015-1026 was first documented as loco qui dicitur Leons, other names were nemus de Leonibus ( 1032), saltus Leonis (1050 ), sylvam Leonum ( Forest of Leon ', 1051-1066 ), foresta de Lyons ( 1204). Marie -Thérèse Morlet believed that the place name from the Roman name Leoncius (see Leontius ) was derived. François de Beaurepair is another explanation. He suspected a connection with the river Lieure and writes the origin of the name of a water-related Celtic root lic or to lig.

William the Conqueror had built a castle in Lyons- la -Forêt. His sons enlarged the place and the youngest, Henry I., died in the castle in 1135th In the 16th century, the castle and the city walls were destroyed. Remains are still partly preserved.

After an official Reformed Church was established in 1557 in Rouen and Evreux in 1559, followed by Lyons- la -Forêt this example. The Protestant Church in Lyons- la -Forêt existed until the revocation of the Edict of Nantes by the Edict of Fontainebleau in 1685.

During World War II the town was spared, no house was damaged.

Culture and sights

Lyons- la -Forêt is nationally represented with four flowers in the Conseil des villes et villages fleuris ( National Council of flowery towns and villages ). The " flowers " are awarded as part of a regional competition, a maximum of three flowers can be achieved. The regional jury decides which communities are eligible to apply to the fourth flower, which is awarded by the national jury.

The state forest of Lyons is one of the most beautiful beech forests of France and home to many trees that are several centuries old. In the Middle Ages it was one of the favorite hunting place of the Dukes of Normandy. To the west of the forest is bounded by the Andelle, on the timber over the Seine was transported to Paris in the 18th century. Unfortunately the forest by the hurricane Lothar was severely damaged in December 1999.

Economy

The municipal area protected geographical indication ( PGI ) for Pork ( Porc de Normandie), poultry ( Volailles de Normandie) and cider ( Cidre de Normandie and cider normand ) apply.
