The nuclear power plant Maanshan (Chinese马鞍山 发电厂, Pinyin Mǎānshān Fādiànchǎng ) is the third commercial nuclear power plant (Chinese第三 核能 发电厂, Pinyin di San Hénéng Fādiànchǎng ) in Taiwan. The facility is located in the south of the island just off the coast near the Kenting National Park in Hengchun and is the only nuclear power plant in southern Taiwan.

The two pressurized water reactors with a gross rated power of 951 MW or 1984 went into operation in 1985. The reactors were built by the U.S. company Westinghouse. The turbines placed the Swiss company Asea Brown Boveri ago. It is the first power plant in Taiwan with pressurized water reactors. The construction costs amounted to 94.7 billion Taiwanese dollars. Other sources report estimated cost of $ 1.19 billion and $ 3.25 billion ultimately.

The radioactive waste is first stored on the factory premises. There is a storage capacity for fuel rods from 40 years of operation.

Accidents

On February 9, 1999 drove a truck that transported fuel for the nuclear power plant, in a house.

On March 18, 2001 unfavorable weather conditions put the external power connections out of service. The emergency diesel generators of a nuclear unit drove to the scram high but a ground fault put the emergency power - rail A lame, and thereby resulting arc also damaged the emergency power rail B, which caused a fire. Side effects

The reactors are located directly on the sea, which is why the cooling water is returned directly there. It is reported that the heated cooling water contributes to coral bleaching.
