Mac OS X Lion

Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion; German "Lion ", Apple partly without the " Mac " OS X Lion as advertised ) is the eighth version of the operating system Mac OS X for the company Apple. It is the successor to Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" and was published on 20 July 2011. The software was presented at a product presentation ( "Back to the Mac " ) on 20 October 2010 for the first time to the public. The first development version was available from 24 February 2011 for members of the Apple Developer Program.

The most important changes include the introduction of controls from the company's own operating system Apple iOS for so-called " post-PC devices" and the integration of ESD - Platform Mac App Store. The operating system was primarily sold as a download through the Mac App Store, this is at least as operating system Mac OS X 10.6.6 " Snow Leopard " forward. Since 16 August 2011, the system was also sold at a higher price on a USB storage device.

The functionality of the previous server version of Mac OS X, Mac OS X Server, is available for Mac OS X 10.7 as a paid upgrade ( " Lion Server "). A separately sold Server version omitted.

Within the first 24 hours after publication, the operating system has been downloaded over one million times. By the beginning of October 2011 six million copies of the software were sold until July 2012 26 million copies. 30% of all Mac OS X installations ran in February 2012 with Mac OS X 10.7 "Lion", which held the second largest share of the versions behind Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard".

Current version is Mac OS X 10.7.5 on 19 September 2012.

The successor of Mac OS X Lion is called OS X 10.8 " Lion Mountain " and was published on 25 July 2012.

  • Mail, Contacts, Calendar settings: Unified management of e -mail, calendar and address book accounts
  • Mission Control - a combined overview of the programs Spaces, Expose, and Dashboard and running full screen programs
  • OpenGL 3.2 - full support for OpenGL 3.2 API

  • Sandbox functionality for applications that can be configured by the developer. The sandboxing already existed in previous versions of Mac OS X, but Apple had the sandbox, held internally by the interface was not released.
  • Safari - WebKit2 support
  • The keychain can now create a CA using the Elliptic Curve Cryptography in graphical mode.
  • Versions - ability to access different versions of a file, similar to the operating concept of the backup program Time Machine
  • A full-screen mode is integrated in the system and is supported by most of the supplied programs.

Different operating system components, including the media center interface Front Row, a pre-installed Java runtime environment and the emulation software Rosetta that allowed the execution of programs for the PowerPC processors are no longer supported. Also iSync is not a part of Mac OS X more, but can be installed subsequently indirectly. In the MySQL server version has been replaced by PostgreSQL. Tomcat and the QuickTime Streaming Server ( QTSS ) are also no longer supported.
