Macedonian wine

The viticulture in Macedonia has a long tradition as in the neighboring countries. The climate is Mediterranean mixed - Continental, the vineyard covers around 22,400 hectares. In the 1980s, two thirds of the total wine production of Yugoslavia in Macedonia were produced. Today, about 40 wineries are fully privatized. The most important vineyard is the cellar Tikves founded in 1946 as a cooperative. This came into force in 2004 Wine Law is based on the EU standards. 80 % of the vineyards are planted with red wine, in addition to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, especially with native varieties such as Vranec, Prokupec and Kratosija. White grapes are Smederevra, Riesling and a little Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.
