Machakos

Machakos is a town in Kenya, 64 kilometers southeast of Nairobi. It is the capital of the Machakos District in Eastern Province of Kenya. Machakos is both an agricultural center and also a satellite town due to its proximity to Nairobi. The population has grown rapidly and in 1999 had a level of 144 109. The residents in the city belong to the majority of the people of the Kambas. Machakos is surrounded by hills with a high number of family farms. Machakos was established in 1889, ten years before Nairobi.

Machakos was the first administrative center of the British colony, but the capital of Kenya was founded in 1899 to Nairobi, Machakos as was passed by the Uganda Railway, which was at that time under construction. The city and the district were named after Masaku, a Kamba - chief.
