Mahwash

Farida Mahwash ( b. 1947 in Kabul ) is a popular Afghan singer who carries the title of Ustad as a single woman. She currently lives in California, USA in exile.

Biography

Farida Mahwash was born in a conservative family. Her mother was a teacher Koran and thus their interest in music was initially not be funded. After completing her studies Mahwash took a job at Radio Kabul. Here her voice was discovered by the director of the station Hafizullah Khyal. She took lessons from Ustad Mohammad Hashem Cheshti, who was an established maestro. 1977 she was awarded Mohamed Hussein Sara Hang the title Ustad. As Farida was forced to leave her country, she fled to Pakistan in 1991. Since moving to the U.S., she released several albums.
