Makron (vase painter)

Macron ( Μάκρων ancient Greek ) was a Greek vase painter of the red-figure style, which worked BC in Athens to 500-480. He seems to have worked closely with the potter Hieron because he has painted almost all of its known today for vessels. Sir John D. Beazley wrote him about 339 works, of which 330 shells. There are many indications that he painted vessels in large quantities and the mass market served. Despite this extensive production he has never repeats itself simply in his paintings and motifs, as far as known so far. Again and again he succeeded to develop new forms of movement and relationships, so that his creativity did not suffer from the monotonous work routine. His favorite subjects were representations of the Komo, Symposium, love scenes, scenes with boys and athletes. In addition, he has devoted himself, though rarely, the Dionysian Thiaos and even more rarely myths.

His early works are characterized by surface -filling compositions with numerous, overlapping figures. With his development but he soon found joy in less extensive character ensembles. He focused more on the representations to each other single large characters and their relationships. In the outer and side pictures he kept strictly to prescribed forms, but never look boring by their non- repetitive elements.

He worked a lot for export to Italy, but also for the Greek market.
