Maltese euro coins

The Maltese euro coins are put into circulation coins of Malta of the single European currency, the euro.

Malta joined the ERM II on 29 April 2005, an introduction of the euro on 1 January 2008 was thus possible. On 27 February 2007 it was announced that Malta has officially made ​​the request for the introduction of the euro. 2006 was one of the main criteria that household debt, at 2.8 percent of gross domestic product. On 16 May 2007, the EU Commission and the European Central Bank have announced that Malta can introduce the euro on 1 January 2008. This decision was officially confirmed at the EU summit in Brussels on 21 June of the Heads of State and Government of the EU. On 1 January 2008 led Malta to adopt the euro.

Design of the coins

About the motifs on the euro coins from Malta for the first time voted in January 2006. Twelve subjects were from four different areas to choose from ( Maltese history, Renaissance, Identity and Archaeology ). The three top-ranked motifs from three different areas should come in the further selection.

Since the first and the third place belong to the Renaissance, different from the third-ranked motif, Fort St. Angelo, for the Maltese euro coins. Instead, the subject with the temple complex Mnajdra was selected.

By the end of May 2006 concrete designs were made ​​on the subjects chosen, also a fourth design with the image of the eight -pointed cross of Malta. In the following second selection process, the Maltese cross in front of the coat of arms of Malta and the temple complex Mnajdra emerged as the winner. The Baptism of Christ came in fourth place and is therefore not shown in the Maltese euro coins.

The Maltese euro coins are minted in the French Mint Monnaie de Paris in Pessac, indicated by the letter F in the bottom star.

Currency Conversion

The cash changeover comprised 41.5 million newly introduced euro banknotes worth 800 million euros and 140 million Maltese euro coins worth 40 million euros. The contract for the embossing of the Maltese euro coins received the French coin to Paris, however, the notes of the country were supplied by the Bank of Italy.
