Mammoth Lakes is a town in Mono County in California (United States). It lies in the valley of the Mammoth Creek at the edge of the Long Valley Caldera above the Owens Valley on the eastern flank of the Sierra Nevada. The place can be reached via the access road CA 203, U.S. Highway 395.

Mammoth Lakes is a popular winter sports resort. In the urban area is the Mammoth Mountain ski area, the ski resort at June Lake and other smaller areas are located in the area. The site evolved from a small mining settlement called Old Mammoth through planned development with the ski area. Opened in 1955 the first ski lift and has since grown steadily. 1984 Mammoth Lakes as a management unit politically independent (incorporated municipality ), making it one of the youngest communities in California.

The place lives almost exclusively on tourism, the local government is financed mainly by a tax of 13% on accommodation establishments (as of 2010 ).

In the ski areas in the region carry local bus routes, the road opens up into the Sierra in the summer half year, the Devils Postpile National Monument and hiking trails, including the John Muir Trail long distance footpath along the mountain range.

End of September 2008 was found in the mountains above the village of the corpse of the adventurer Steve Fossett, who was killed there in September 2007 in the crash of his aircraft.

On 3 July 2012, the city filed a motion for creditor protection under Chapter 9 of the U.S. bankruptcy laws. The reason for this was an ongoing process since 2006, a real estate developer against the city, she lost and was sentenced to pay damages in the amount of nearly 43 million dollars.
