The Manchester Arena is an indoor arena in Manchester, United Kingdom. The arena, which was until 2004 Venue professional hockey and basketball teams now serves mainly as a concert hall. It is located in the north of the city center, close to Victoria Station and is owned by the Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns among other things, the Staples Center in Los Angeles or The O ₂ in London.
History
The arena was named after a British cable television provider, opened on 15 July 1995 under the name NYNEX Arena. From 1998 to 2011 she was named Manchester Evening News Arena, which emerges from a sponsorship agreement with the local newspaper Manchester Evening News. Since 2012 she is wearing only the name Manchester Arena. Originally, the arena in support of the ultimately unsuccessful applications Olympics the city of Manchester was built in 1996 and 2000. In 1997, the visit of Manchester Storm games against Sheffield Steelers and Manchester Giants against London Leopards provided with an attendance of 17,425 or 14,151 set a record for the highest number of spectators at a hockey or basketball game in the UK. The number of visitors between Manchester and Sheffield is today still the highest in an ice hockey league game in England. In addition to Storm and the Giants played in the 2003/04 season with Manchester Phoenix of the English Premier Ice Hockey League, a third professional sports club in the arena, but which moved to a smaller stadium due to lack of gate receipts after just one year.
The Manchester Arena has so far (as of October 2009) already five times the arena with the largest total number of visitors to concerts and other events. In 2007, a total of 1,245,196 tickets were sold, which one was awarded to date the last time as World's Busiest Arena in category Concerts, closely followed by New York's Madison Square Garden and The O ₂ in London.
