Mandeure

Mandeure is a municipality with 4905 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Doubs in Franche -Comté, a French situated on the border with Switzerland region. The village lies in the valley of the Doubs, a left tributary of the Saône.

The 5022 population of municipality is part of the Communauté d' agglomération du Pays de Montbéliard, and therefore metro area, the area of Belfort and Montbeliard. Mandeure is northern starting point of the long-distance route Grande Traversée du Jura.

History

In Roman times Mandeure was Epomanduodurum. It is not certain whether this name comes from the Celtic or Roman. At that time it had regional importance as a city. The most visible remains of that time belong to one of the largest Gallo-Roman amphitheater. Otherwise, it was found Baths and Roman houses.

In the 12th century, the Archdiocese of Besançon and the Counts of Montbéliard allocated to the area.

On July 25, 1583 Reformation Mandeure reached. In the period that followed, there was a community of about 300 Catholics as part of the Archdiocese and another from about 30 Protestant under Prince of Montbéliard (Württemberg).

On April 15, 1792 Mandeure an independent republic with the motto aquila non capit muscas ( Eng.: The eagle does not fly or to the eagle satisfy no flies ). This still holds true today.

Shortly afterwards, on October 10, 1793 Mandeure France is added, is now on the Doubs.

Economy

Since the end of the 19th century exist in the place of production Peugeot. Initially, pepper mills and cars were produced. The latter produced the PSA Group now or in Sochaux Peugeot other plants, but not in Mandeure. Over longer time until the 1980s, Peugeot presented manufactures its bikes or at least a part of it in Mandeure. Today in the town is only Peugeot Motocycles, a scooter manufacturer, level.

Also, wear a paper mill and a company that specializes in corrosion protection, the economy of the town. Mandeure also has a campsite which is located on the banks of the Doubs.
