Valentigney

Valentigney is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté. It is the capital of the canton in the arrondissement of Montbéliard Valentigney. Valentigney is the third largest city in the agglomeration Montbéliard.

Geography

Valentigney is located at 325 m, about 6 km southeast of the town of Montbéliard (air line). The city extends to the south of the basin of Montbeliard, on the left bank of the Doubs, which here flows in a wide arc to the heights of the Bois de Voujeaucourt, on the northern edge of the foothills of the Jura.

The area of ​​9.74 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Doubstals on peripheral Jura. The Doubs here describes a large arc around the wooded plateau of the Bois de Voujeaucourt and reaches north of the city, the pool of Montbéliard. It forms in the south, in the east ( except for a short distance part ) and in the north the municipality border. The flat valley floor generally has a width of 1 to 1.5 kilometers and is on average 325 m.

From the river, the municipality's area extends westward across the wide Talniederung and a relatively steep slope down to the adjacent plateau with the heights of Mont Roussot (402 m) and Bois du Fouré (425 m). History

The earliest traces of human presence in the municipality of Valentigney to the Bronze Age ( Payot Abri de la Baume ). Even during the Roman period there were settlements in the valley due to its proximity to Epomanduodurum ( Mandeure ).

Is first mentioned in the 12th century Valentigney. Since the Middle Ages Valentigney belonged to the territory of the Counts of Montbéliard. This led in 1541 the Reformation. With the annexation of the county of Montbeliard the village came in 1793 final in French hands.

Until the mid-19th century Valentigney was a predominantly agricultural community. Then set up a rapid development to the industrial site. A leading role were the families and Peugeot Japy. Population

With 11,155 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Valentigney one of the largest municipalities in the department of Doubs. From 1850 to 1930, the population showed a continuous growth. Economy and infrastructure

Around the middle of the 19th century Valentigney developed into a characteristically industrial community. The industrial and commercial areas are concentrated in the valley along the Doubs, especially on the right side of the valley opposite the old town center. Sports
