Pont-de-Roide

Pont -de- Roide is a commune with 4389 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Doubs in the Franche -Comté. It is the capital of the Canton of Pont -de- Roide.

Location

The place with just under 5000 inhabitants, situated at the confluence of the Doubs, the Ranceuse and Roide. The geographic coordinates are: 47.83 Latitude and longitude 6.77. The altitude is 360 meters. The place is remote from Maîche 17 km from Montbéliard and 24 kilometers, passing through the country roads D 437 and D 73

History

Since about the 14th century dominated the men of Neuchâtel the area. 1388 the bridge over the river, was built on the site where it is located today. The bridge, at the same time through a border fortification to Switzerland, led to the development of a trading venue. Here in particular the salt trade was settled; 70 to 80 truckloads per week took until about 1630 to go abroad.

1750, the bridge with six arches and a tower on one of the arcade was rebuilt. 1756 the parish church was rebuilt in the Romanesque Revival style. 1790 was the place cantonal capital. 1842 was the Peugeot family in Pont -de- Roide down and built manufacturing plants. After the Franco-German War of 1870 /71 place was considering a German threat fortification, Fort des Roches.

Pont -de- Riode is now united with the place Vermondans. Other community members are: Bourguignon, Noire Fontaine, and Roide Écurcey.
