Mangalia

Mangalia is a city in Romania. The port city on the Black Sea, in the county of Constanţa in 2007 and had approximately 40,000 residents ( including 3,000 Muslim Turks and Tatars ).

History

The town was BC as a colony of Greeks from Dorian Heraclea Pontica ( in turn daughter Megaras city ) founded in the late 6th century with the name Kallatis.

Since the 9th century, it was known to the Turks as a city Pangalia, with the Romanians as Tomisovara and among the Greeks as Panglicara. She was historically one of the most important ports on the west coast of the Black Sea.

In the near Mangalia the later of the leading Bolsheviks belonging Georgijewitsch Christian Rakovsky managed his Country Estate, when he was still large landowners.

Tourism

Today Mangalia is a health resort and destination for marine leisure travelers. In the city there is also the oldest surviving mosque in Romania and an archaeological museum. At the newly built Hotel President can visit interesting excavations of the ancient city in the basement.

Economy

The largest industrial companies in the city is the Daewoo Mangalia Heavy Industries, a joint venture founded in 1997 between the former state-owned shipyard May 2 and the South Korean Daewoo Group. The shipyard specializes in the remodeling and repair of cargo vessels and has a capacity of six newly manufactured vessels up to Panamax size and up to forty ship repairs per year.
