Ovidiu

Ovidiu is a town in the district of Constanta in the Dobrudja ( Dobrogea ) region in Romania.

Geographical location

Ovidiu is located near the coast of the Black Sea at the lagoon Siutghiol. The center of the county seat, Constanţa is located about 12 kilometers southeast.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1650 under the name Silişte. In the course of colonization by Turks, he received the name of Turkish origin Canara. 1930 - in the era of Greater Romania - was renamed Ovidiu after the Roman poet Ovid, who is to be buried on an island in the lagoon. The main economic activities are agriculture, construction industry, quarrying and tourism.

Population

1902 721 inhabitants were registered in the city; 256 of them were Turks and Tatars, 227 Romanians, 130 German, 112 Bulgarians and 31 others. 2002 lived in Ovidiu 13,134 people, including 12,175 Romanians, 442 Tartars, 357 Turks, 117 Roma, 21 Russians and 10 Lipovans and Hungary.

Traffic

The leading Ovidiu railway line from Constanta to Năvodari is currently (2008) out of service. Through the town the Europe streets run 60 and 87 There are bus connections to Constanta and Năvodari.
