Murfatlar

Murfatlar ( Basarabi 1924-1965 and 1980-2007 ) is a town in the district of Constanta in the Dobrogea region, Romania. The approximately 10,000 inhabitants are Romanians, Tatars and Turks.

Archaeological finds have revealed that the village was already inhabited before the year 992. The first written mention of the village, under the name Murfatlar, dates from the year 1864. Near the town of cave complex Basarabi - Murfatlar is the oldest church on Romanian territory.

The city is known mainly because of the large surface area operated viticulture. It also has a port on the Danube - Black Sea Canal.

Murfatlar is the birthplace of Romanian President Traian Basescu.
