Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente

Manuel José do Nascimento Clemente Macário (* July 16, 1948 in Torres Vedras, Portugal), Patriarch of Lisbon.

Life

Manuel José do Nascimento Clemente Macário studied history at the University of Lisbon in 1972 and entered the seminary in Olivais and studied philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 29 June 1979 Cardinal António Ribeiro ordination. At the Catholic University of Portugal in 1979 he was a PhD in historical theology. Since 1975 he teaches Church History at the Catholic University. From 1980 to 1989 he worked in the management team of the seminary in Olivais; He was Vice- Rector and Rector 1997 1989.

Pope John Paul II appointed him on 6 November 1999 as Titular Bishop of Pinhel and auxiliary bishop of Lisbon. He received his episcopal consecration the Patriarch of Lisbon, José da Cruz Policarpo, on 22 January 2000; Co-consecrators were Manuel Franco da Costa de Oliveira Falcão, Bishop Emeritus of Beja, and Albino Mamede Cleto, Coadjutor Bishop of Coimbra.

On 22 February 2007, he was named Pope Benedict XVI. Bishop of Porto. The solemn inauguration ( enthronement ) was held on 25 March of the same year. In addition, he was appointed Benedict XVI. December 29, 2011 as the Member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications.

Pope Francis appointed him on May 18, 2013 Patriarch of Lisbon. On June 21, 2013, was da Cruz Policarpo Cardinal elected to succeed José chairman of the Portuguese Episcopal Conference.
