Mar Roxas

Manuel " Mar" Araneta Roxas II ( born May 13, 1957 in Manila ) is a Filipino politician of the Liberal Party of the Philippines.

Life

Mar Roxas comes from an influential family of politicians in the Philippines. His grandfather Manuel Roxas was governor, deputy and 1946-1948 President of the Philippines. His father Gerardo Roxas Sr. was also a deputy and senator, while his brother Gerardo Roxas Jr. from 1987 to 1992 was also a member.

After attending the elementary school and the high school Ateneo de Manila University, where he studied from 1974 to 1979 economics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Subsequently, he joined the private sector and was in the following years, among other director of Kauswagan Development Corp. , The Myapo Prawn Farm Corp. , Vice President of the Progressive Development Corp.. as well as president of the North Star Capital Inc. and Atok Big Wedge Mining Co.. Moreover, he became involved in social and community organizations and was co-founder of Books for the Barangay Foundation Inc. and the Capiz Alliance for Ecological Development Inc..

In 1992 he started as a member of the Lakas -CMD ( Lakas - Kabalikat ng Pilipino - Christian Muslim Mala Yang Democrats ) his political career and the Members of the House of Representatives of the Philippines ( Kapulungán ng mga ng Pilipinas Kinatawán ) was first elected. There he took after his re- election in 1995 and 1998, the interests of the 1st electoral district of the province of Capiz to 2001.

2001, Mar Roxas of President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo to the Trade and Industry Minister ( Secretary of Trade and Industry ) in their cabinet. The ministerial office he held until December 2003.

He then ran for the Lakas - CMD for a seat in the Senate ( Senado ng Pilipinas ) and belonged to the Senate after his 2004 election until 2010. During his membership in the Senate he was chairman of the Committees for Economic Affairs and of Trade and Industry. He was also Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Public Works and a member of several other committees.

After the announcement of Benigno Aquino III. to run for the presidency in elections in the Philippines in 2010, he withdrew his candidacy also previously announced and was instead Aquino's vice presidential candidate ( "running - mate" ) for the Partido Liberal.

In the elections of 10 May 2010, however, Roxas succumbed to the vice presidential candidate of the Partido Lakas ng Bayan Demokratiko Pilipino - Jejomar Binay, the competitors of former President Joseph Estrada. While Roxas 13,918,490 of the vote received ( 39.58 percent), Binay reached 14,645,574 ( 41.65 %).
