March of Genoa

The Margraviate of East Ligurian Riviera ( Liguria Orientale Marca ) was a political entity in northern Italy from the mid-10th century. Other names for this area are: Marca Januensis - Mark Genovese - due to their capital Genoa, and Marca Obertengha after the first Marquis Oberto, Count of Luni. It included the rectangle Genoa, Luni, Tortona, Parma and Piacenza; indirectly included the rule over Corsica and Sardinia to do so.

In 950 Berengar of Ivrea was King of Italy. At the beginning of the following year he completed the reorganization of the military structures south of the Po from which his predecessor Hugo had I started with the aim to be better prepared against Saracen raids from the sea. He made ​​three new territories for which he appointed the faithful with the first hour Margrave:

  • The Marca Liguria Occidentale he gave Oberto of Luni, the progenitor of the Lombard Obertenghi
  • The Marca Liguria Orientale ( Westliguren ), which followed in the West, and which he, Count of Vercelli was Aleramo, the ancestor of the Frankish descent Aleramiden ( and was also named after him Marca Aleramica ) and
  • The Marca di Torino, which was even further west, and that he, Count of Auriate gave Arduin Glaber, the head of the Frankish descent Arduine; Mark this county was for him also the name Marca arduinica.

The area north of the Po ( with the exception of the area around Vercelli) remained as the Margraviate of Ivrea reduced (or Marca Anscarica - by a different name for the reigning House of Burgundy - Ivrea ) exist.

The margrave title was soon worn by all members of the family Obertos, the Margraviate of itself was not of permanent inventory. The family remained mainly the southeast of the Margraviate of where the lines Pallavicini and Malaspina could maintain their own larger margravates.
