Marian Seldes

Marian Seldes ( born August 23, 1928 in New York City ) is an American actress.

Life and achievements

Marian Seldes is the daughter of journalist and publisher Gilbert Seldes. Her uncle was the journalist George Seldes. Marian studied acting at New York City 's Neighborhood Playhouse. Her first TV role was in an episode of the television series Hallmark Hall of Fame in the year 1952. After a few more guest roles in television series she appeared alongside Robert Wagner on the Western Story of Jesse James (1957). In the film drama Crime & Punishment, USA (1959 ), she played one of the major roles.

For her role in the play A Delicate Balance Seldes received in 1967, the Tony Award. In the same year she became a lecturer at the Juilliard School of Drama, where she taught, among others, Kevin Kline, Laura Linney and Kevin Spacey. She worked there until 1991.

In the years 1974-1982 the voice of the actress on CBS Radio Mystery Theater was heard. In the film drama fingers - Affectionate and brutal (1978 ) Seldes played alongside Harvey Keitel one of the major roles. Meanwhile, she was also seen in numerous plays and was nominated in 1971, 1978, 1999 and 2003 for the Tony Award. In the film drama dreams to the ends of the earth (1998) she played the dying mother of the mentally handicapped Ricky Schroth ( Kevin Bacon).

Seldes was married in 1953 to 1961 with the film producer Julian Claman, by whom she has a daughter. In 1990 she married the director and screenwriter Garson Kanin, who died in 1999.
