Marianne Thyssen

Marianne Leonie Petrus Thyssen ( born July 24, 1956 in Sint- Gillis- Waas ) is a Belgian politician. She is a member of the European Parliament since 1991. From 15 May 2008 to 23 June 2010, she was Chair of the Flemish Christian Democratic party Christian - Democratisch en Vlaams (CD & V).

Life

Marianne Thyssen grew up as one of three children in a family of bakers in Sint- Gillis- Waas. She attended schools in Wachtebeke and Sint-Niklaas and then studied law at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL ), where she worked as an assistant at the Faculty of Law after graduating in 1979. From 1980 she worked as a legal adviser for the Mittelstand Association Christelijke Middenstands -en Burgervrouwen ( CMBV ) (now MARKANT ) and for the Nationaal Christelijk Middenstand Verbond ( NCMV ) (now UNIZO ), in which in 1988 director of the organization offices was in 1991 briefly served as Secretary General had.

First political experiences collected Thyssen as an employee in the office of the Secretary of State for Health Wivina Demeester ( 1986-1988 ). In December 1991 she became a member of the European Parliament and confirmed at the European elections of 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009, in office. In July 2004 she took over the vice-chairmanship of the Group of European People's Party - European Democrats.

Even in her hometown Sint- Joris- Weert Thyssen has been politically active since 1995 - first as a municipal councilor and from 2001 to 2008 as the juror.

On 15 May 2008 Thyssen was elected chairperson of the CD & V. After the II, Yves Leterme (CD & V) caused as a result of the resignation of the government Leterme early federal elections of 13 June 2010 in which they sought as a top candidate for the CD & V, the Prime minister, Thyssen looked around for a clear defeat for the CD & V forced by the party leaders resign.

As a member of the European Parliament she is a member of the Executive Board in the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats). Thyssen is a member of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and the Delegation to the EU -Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee. As a deputy she is in the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China.
