Mariano Simon Garriga

Mariano Simon Garriga ( born May 31, 1886 in Port Isabel, Texas, † February 21, 1965 ) was an American clergyman and bishop of Corpus Christi.

Life

Mariano Simon Garriga received on 2 July 1911, the sacrament of Holy Orders for the Vicariate Apostolic of Brownsville.

Pope Pius XI. appointed him on 20 June 1936 Coadjutor Bishop of Corpus Christi and Titular Bishop of Syene. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of San Antonio, Arthur Jerome Drossaerts, on 21 September of the same year; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Corpus Christi, Emmanuel Boleslaw Ledvina, and the Bishop of Fargo, Aloysius Muench.

With the resignation Emmanuel Boleslaw Ledvinas on March 15, 1949 Garriga followed them as Bishop of Corpus Christi. During his tenure, he brought the Jesuits to Corpus Christi and gave them the lead and founder of the minor seminary in 1960. He promoted the church's education by setting up a large number of parish schools.

Garriga attended the first session of the Second Vatican Council as part of a Council Father.
