Marie-Galante

Marie- Galante is one of the Windward Islands of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean. She belongs to the French overseas department of Guadeloupe. The nearly circular island ( well diameter 15 km) has an area of 158 km ² and 13,470 inhabitants ( 2004). Administratively, the island is divided into three communities of Grand -Bourg, Cape Terre and Saint- Louis.

Marie- Galante was discovered by Columbus on his second voyage on November 3, 1493 and bears the name of one of his own caravel Maria Galanda. In 1648, the first French settlers settled and cultivate early stage sugarcane.

Main product of the island 's rum (white and brown). Once it was almost 100 wind mills for pressing of sugar cane on the island, earning her the sobriquet l' île aux moulins cent earned ( " the island of the 100 mills "). Of these, about 70 towers still partially visible.
