Marie is a female first name. It is a French variant of the female given name Mary, and a diminutive of the male given name French Catholic Mary. As a Catholic, Protestant and Orthodox Remembrance Day January 1st is celebrated.

End of the 19th century belonged to the Name Marie at the ten most awarded female name in Germany. The popularity of the name then declined continuously until the early 60s and stagnated until the late 70's at relatively low levels. Since the early 80s, a clear upward trend in the popularity of the name was recorded. In the new millennium, the name was even once already the most awarded first name for girls in general.
