Marie of Brandenburg-Kulmbach

Marie of Brandenburg- Kulmbach (* October 14, 1519 in Ansbach, † October 31, 1567 in Heidelberg) was a Princess of Brandenburg- Kulmbach and by marriage Electress of the Palatinate.

Life

Marie was the eldest child of the Margrave Casimir of Brandenburg- Kulmbach (1481-1527) from his marriage to Susan (1502-1543), daughter of Duke Albrecht IV of Bavaria. After the death of her father Marie was educated by her uncle George in the Lutheran faith.

She married on 21 October 1537 Kreuznach later to become the Elector Friedrich III. of the Palatinate ( 1515-1576 ). The marriage was happy and Marie, who was described as intelligent and devout, worked in the Protestant sense one on her husband, who was Catholic. In 1546, Frederick, known only to the Lutheran doctrine and took over for his brother Albrecht Alcibiades managing the Frankish countries. Since the family lived in poverty, Marie turned repeatedly to her uncle Albert of Prussia to financial benefits.

After the death of Marie's stepfather Otto Heinrich 1559 her husband Frederick was Elector Palatine. As Electress she was close to government affairs, though Friedrich brooked no interference. Influence they had in religious matters, as a strict Lutheran, she was a resolute opponent of Zwingli.

Your final years spent suffering from gout Electress primarily confined to bed. She was buried in the Holy Ghost Church in Heidelberg.
