Marie Luise Gothein

Marie Luise Gothein (born Schroeter; born September 12, 1863 in Passenheim, † December 24, 1931 in Heidelberg) was a German art historian and expert on garden art.

Life

Marie Luise Gothein, born Schroeter - wife of Eberhard Gothein, mother of Wolfgang, Percy Gothein and Werner Gothein, sister of George Gothein - had specialized since 1892 as a self-taught on the history of literature and garden art of the 18th century. To the self-study, she was forced because women in the 19th century, were not admitted to German universities to study. At least every two years, it expanded its self-study by multi-week stays in the British Museum in London.

In the time in Heidelberg Marie Luise Gothein and her husband were friends with Friedrich Gundolf since 1910. About this friendship of the contact Stefan George and the George circle came into being in 1919, the son Percy was taken.

After her husband's death in 1923 Marie Luise Gothein undertook since 1925 Expeditions to China, Japan and Java, and dealt with the Indian culture. With the Indologist Heinrich Zimmer she was friends. Marie Luise Gothein is the author of the standard work history of garden design.

In 1931 she was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Heidelberg, 1955 Gotheinstraße was named in Heidelberg- New home after the couple Gothein and 1995, a memorial plaque for the scholarly couple in the Weber Strasse 11, Heidelberg - New home attached.
