Population and Economy

In 1820, the population stood at 379 062, this rose to 1850 on 630 405 and up to 1905 932 434.

The county was agricultural. The forestry played a role. In only a small scale mining was carried on lignite. The industry focused on the processing of agricultural and forestry products as well as the necessary production machinery. The making of linen was usually operated as a sideline. Influenced by trade were Thorn and Graudenz. Since 1852 the area of ​​the Prussian Eastern Railway was opened. There were other railway connections. The Vistula River served as a waterway.

Policy

Politically National Liberals ( 26.3 %) and Conservatives were about equally represented ( 22.9% ) at the beginning of the German Empire (1871 ). The strongest political force, however, were the Poles who were represented in the Reichstag and the Prussian House of Representatives of the Polish group with 45.3%. As agrarian district, the Social Democrats did not play a role. This has not changed until 1912 hardly anything. The National Liberals have largely maintained their position and came to 20.7 %. As a result of the Versailles Treaty the Government District was dissolved with its entry into force in early 1920. Parts fell to the newly formed Second Republic of Poland, the rest fell by the government district of West Prussia, or to the boundary Posen- West Prussia.

Since the German occupation in 1939, a new government district Marienwerderstraße was formed in Danzig- West Prussia. After 1945, the entire area fell to Poland.
