Mário Jardel

Mário Jardel Almeida Ribeiro ( born September 18, 1973 in Fortaleza, Brazil ) is a former Brazilian football player who also has Portuguese nationality. In Brazil he is known as Jardel Mário Jardel in Europe rather than. He plays on the classic center forward position.

His younger brother George Henrique Almeida Ribeiro, briefly George Jardel is also active soccer player and spent most of his career in Portugal.

Jardel comes from the youth of Gremio. His professional career began in 1993 at SE Vasco da Gama. After he had returned to his home club and had won the Copa Libertadores with this, he moved to Europe in 1996 to the Portuguese first division club FC Porto. In Porto Jardel was in four years three times champion and twice Cup winners. He had a total of 130 goals in 125 league games large portion of Porto's success, was four times top scorer in the Portuguese league and beyond in the 1998/99 season also Europe's top scorer. After four years, he went for a transfer fee of 16 million euros in Turkey for Galatasaray.

In 2001 he moved back to Portugal. With Sporting Lisbon Jardel was 2002 champion and cup winner. The first half of the season 2003/2004 he spent at Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League, the second half of the then first division Ancona Calcio in Italy, but even he could not save them from relegation from Serie A.

The striker returned in the summer of 2004 returned to South America to Newell's Old Boys (Argentina ), where he - remained until the summer of 2005 - with a four-week spell at CD Alavés in Spain. Five times he was top scorer in the Portuguese first league, 2000, best scorer of the UEFA Champions League.

Jardel graduated ten games for the Seleção and scored one goal. For the 2002 World Cup, he was not taken into account.

Others

At Jardel top European clubs such as Real Madrid were interested in the course of his career. But he came too late to appointments or did not abide by agreements, so that from a move to a big European club never materialized. His lifestyle had him instead fall into depression, which led to obesity. Both led to the fact that he no longer ran aground from 2003 for big clubs.

On 25 September 2004, the Portuguese sports newspaper A Bola published an investigative report which revealed that Jardel was involved in the drug and red light scene. Jardel confirmed the veracity of this report.

At the invitation of a Turkish company, one has seen him next to Pierre van Hooijdonk last 26 April 2008 as a guest of the Turkish derby between Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. The next day he was a guest of a TV program and said that he train again, feel good and wait for offers in particular from Turkey.
