Marmorera

Marmorera ( German / Italian, German and dated to 1902 officially Marmels, Romansh Murmarera ) is a municipality in the stone above (Romansh Surses; Surses circle ) in the district of Albula in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland.

History

The historic Marmorera been inhabited since the Middle Ages. After 1838 Marmorera benefited by the expansion of the road over the Julier Pass by increasing postal traffic and the emergence of tourism. After the opening of the Gotthard and the Albula Railway stagecoach traffic collapsed and the community impoverished.

The municipal area above the west end of the dam stands the ruined castle Marmels.

Languages

Most residents spoke before the Romansh Surmeirisch. Until the Second World War, the church was almost monolingual Romansh. This value decreased in 1970 to 78%. Since 1980, speaks a slight majority of the German population. Because of the small population, the ratios can, however, vary greatly.

Overall, dominated in 2000 only 53 % of the population Romansh, which is bureaucratic language along with German.
