Marquess of Cholmondeley

Marquess of Cholmondeley ( [ tʃʌmli ] ) is a British hereditary title of nobility in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, named after the family Cholmondeley.

Ancestral homes of the family are Houghton Hall and Cholmondeley Castle.

Award

The title was in 1815, 4th Earl of Cholmondeley awarded to George James Cholmondeley, who had served for many years the Crown, among other things, as Lord Steward. His ancestors had been raised already in 1661 and 1706 to the Viscount to Earl.

The eldest son of the Marquess takes the courtesy title Earl of Rocksavage, whose eldest son of Viscount Malpas those.

Lord Great Chamberlain

The Marquess of Cholmondeley is co-owner of the office of Lord Great Chamberlain, one of the Great Officers of State. With a half share he may hold the office during the tenure of every other monarch. The other half is divided into small and very small portions. In the reign of Queen Elizabeth II have several Marquesses the office occupied.
