Martín Palermo

Martín Palermo ( born November 7, 1973 in La Plata ) is a former Argentine football player who played for Boca Juniors.

Playing career

Association

Palermo started his professional career at Estudiantes de La Plata. Here he gave on July 5, 1992 in a 0-0 draw against San Lorenzo his professional debut and played for the club until 1997, before joining league rivals Boca Juniors. Here he managed through his goal threat and a high hit rate finally the breakthrough. In 1998 he was in the Apertura top scorer with 20 goals in 19 games and in the same year in South America Player of the Year. One suffered in November 1999 cruciate ligament tear prevented an almost perfect exchange to Italy Lazio Rome. On 24 May 2000 he made his comeback in the quarter- finals of the Copa Libertadores. Here, the pre-decisive goal he managed to make it 3-0 against CA River Plate, after the first leg had been lost with 1:2.

On 28 November 2000 Palermo came to the attention of the Spanish football club: In the finals of the World Cup he scored two goals, the Boca Juniors led to the 2-1 win over Real Madrid and thus winning the title. Subsequently, he was voted player of the game.

During the winter break began Palermo stay in Europe, however, was not pursued by happiness. First, he was obliged by Villarreal. On November 20, 2001, he rose after a goal is scored on a wall that fell over but under pressure from the Villarreal fans. He broke both the tibia and fibula and fell two months out. After ten years of absence from the Argentine national team, he was appointed again by the new national team coach Diego Maradona, scoring in the match against Ghana ( 30 September 2009 ) two goals in the 2-0 victory for Argentina. October 10, 2009 Palermo scored a World Cup qualifier against Peru in extra time the decisive goal in a 2-1 Final and thus preserved the chance to qualify the Argentines. In the final group match of the Football World Cup 2010, he scored against Greece after coming on the 2-0 win.

Coaching career

Since 2012, he coached the only professional club in Mendoza, CD Godoy Cruz.

  • In an international match of the Copa America against Colombia on July 4, 1999, he failed to score three penalties. This " power " brought him into the Guinness Book of Records.

  • He even played with his former coach Maradona in a team.
  • After his goal in a game of the Copa del Rey he rushes to the cheering fans of Villa Real, under the load collapses a concrete wall. Palermo broke his tibia and fibula and thus missed the 2002 World Cup.
