Martin-von-Wagner-Museum

The Martin-von -Wagner- Museum includes the art collections of the Julius- Maximilians- University of Würzburg and has been housed since 1963 in the south wing of the Prince Bishop's Residenz in Würzburg. It is one of the largest university museums in Europe.

History

The collection was founded in 1832 as aesthetic attribute was initially extended significantly through the art collection of Johann Martin von Wagner ( 1777-1858 ), who worked as an artist, archaeologist and art as an agent for the Bavarian King Ludwig I.. The museum is due, therefore, since the name of Wagner. Since 1963, the museum is housed in the south wing of the residence.

Collections

The museum includes a collection of antiques, an art gallery and a graphic collection.

Collection of Classical Antiquities

The antique collection comprises works of art and antiquities of the Mediterranean dating from the 3rd millennium BC to Late Antiquity. Focus is on works from ancient Greece, but the collection also includes pieces from the period of the Roman Empire, the Etruscans, from Egypt and the Near Eastern cultures (especially Altägäis, Asia Minor and Cyprus). Of particular importance is the collection of Greek vases. It is the third largest collection of Greek vases in Germany, this includes approximately 5,000 objects and documents the Greek pottery from the Late Mycenaean times to the Hellenistic period. Important pieces include the Oinochoe of Mamarce, the Würzburg Four Seasons altar and the Würzburg Brygosschale.

Picture gallery

The art gallery includes German, Dutch and Italian paintings from the 15th to 20th centuries, including paintings by Hans Leonhard Schäufelein, Bartholomäus Spranger, Pieter Claesz, Luca Giordano, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, Friedrich Overbeck, Carl Rottmann, Francis Spranger, Max Liebermann and Hans Purrmann. In addition, this part of the collection includes sculptures. Among the sculptures in particular works by Tilman Riemenschneider and from school Riemenschneider be mentioned.

Graphic Collection

The Graphic Collection includes approximately 11,000 drawings and 14,000 leaf prints. Included here are, among others, engravings and woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer, hand drawings by Federico Barocci and drawings by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo and his son Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo.
