Mary Emily Eaton

Mary Emily Eaton (* 1873 in Coleford, Gloucestershire, † 1961 in Somerset ) was a British painter plants.

Life and work

Mary Emily Eaton studied at the Taunton School of Art in Somerset and the Royal College of Art in London Art. Some time afterwards she worked for the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company. 1909 Eaton traveled to Jamaica to visit a brother and a sister. During her two- year stay in Jamaica, she became consumed butterflies that she held in watercolors. 1911 Eaton visited friends in New York City and received in June 1911 a job as an artist at the New York Botanical Garden, which she held until January 1932.

During her time at the New York Botanical Garden Eaton created about 80 percent of the 800 panels of the journal Addisonia the botanical garden, which appeared from 1916 to 1964. She was responsible for many of the illustrations, which in 1919-1923 published by Nathaniel Lord Britton standard work and Joseph Nelson Rose on the cactus The Cactaceae: Descriptions and Illustrations were used of Plants of the Cactus Family. In addition, she was responsible for the National Geographic Magazine and the journal Contributions from the United States National Herbarium. In May 1947, she returned to Britain.
