Mary Peters (athlete)

Mary Peters, DBE ( born July 6, 1939 in Halewood, Merseyside ) is a British track and field athlete. In 1972, she was Olympic champion in the pentathlon.

In 1964, she first took part in the Olympic Games and reached 4th place. Peters won at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the Gold medal in the pentathlon, which was also the same world record with 4801 points, ahead of the German Heide Rosendahl favorite ( silver) and the East German athlete Burglinde Pollak.

Starting in Northern Ireland, she won at the British Commonwealth Games in 1974 also gold in the pentathlon in front of the Nigerian Modupe Oshikoya ( silver) and the Englishwoman Ann Wilson ( bronze). As early as 1966 they had reached a Silver Medal, 1970, a gold medal.

For her athletic achievements and her charitable work Mary Peters has received several awards and honors. So she was, among other things in 1972, after her Olympic victory, for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, Sportsman of the Year in the UK, was elected.
