Mascouche

Mascouche is a city in the southwest of the Canadian province of Quebec. It is located in the administrative region of Lanaudière, slightly more than 30 km north of Montréal. Mascouche part of the regional county municipality ( municipalité régional du comté ) Les Moulins, has an area of ​​106.64 km ² and has 42 491 inhabitants ( 2011).

Geography

Mascouche is located in the Rive- Nord, about five kilometers from the north shore of the Rivière des Mille Îles. The terrain is mostly flat and is drained by the strongly meandering tributary Rivière Mascouche. The municipal area includes the settlements Domaine - Guilbeault, Lac -Samson and Mascouche -Ouest. Neighboring communities are Saint -Roch -de- l'Achigan in the north, L' Épiphanie in the northeast, Repentigny to the east and Terrebonne in the south and west.

History

The current urban area belonged from 1647 to Seigneurie of Repentigny. 1717 the first settlers settled on the banks of the Rivière Mascouche. This name is attested since 1722; in the language of the Algonquin it means " little bear ". 1750, the parish of Saint -Henri -de- Mascouche was founded.
