Matatiele

Matatiele is a town in the municipality of Matatiele, Alfred Nzo District, Eastern Cape Province in South Africa. 2011, it had 12,466 inhabitants.

The city and community name is derived from Sesotho term for ducks are derived flown, a reference to the large number of wetlands in the area, which serve as the duck habitat.

It was founded by the Griqua, whose capital was the 70 km distant Kokstad. The city and its surroundings were the end of the 19th century, a focal point for horse thieves and smugglers who used the nearby Drakensberg as a retreat.

Today the city is the center of the surrounding agricultural production plants ( corn and dairy products as well as horse breeding ). Matatiele is Qacha 's Nek in Lesotho from the nearest city.
