Matt Garrison

Matthew " Matt" Garrison ( born June 2, 1970 in New York City / USA ) is an American jazz bassist. He is the son of bassist Jimmy Garrison and Roberta Escamilla Garrison. After the death of his father, the family emigrated to Italy, where Garrison started playing bass and piano. In 1988 he returned to the United States. There he lived for two years with Jack DeJohnette. During this time he was a student of Jack DeJohnette and Dave Holland.

In 1989 he received a scholarship to study in Boston at the Berklee College of Music. There he began his career as a sideman by Gary Burton, Lyle Mays, among others After graduation he moved to Brooklyn in 1994. Since then he has worked with musicians such as Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Chaka Khan, Joe Zawinul, John Scofield, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Jack DeJohnette, Steve Coleman, Cassandra Wilson, Wallace Roney, Pat Metheny, Geri Allen, Tito Puente, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Mike Stern collaborated among others.

Matt Garrison has developed a pizzicato technique in which he uses all four fingers of the right hand.

In 1998 he founded the production company GarrisonJazz, which produces and markets his music. With Fortuna Sung together he is the owner of the Brooklyn studios and venue ShapeShifter Lab.

In 2004 and 2005 he won the Rising Star category in the Downbeat Critics Polls (Electric Bass ).
