Maurício Gugelmin

Maurício Gugelmin ( born April 20, 1963 in Joinville ) is a former Brazilian racing driver and Formula 1 driver.

Gugelmin, who comes from a wealthy family, began at the age of twelve years with the karting. At age 17, he moved to the Formula racing and drove to the Brazilian Formula Fiat. In 1980 he moved to Europe because he figured there is a better chance of a successful formula career. While the youngster competed in the British Formula Ford in 1600, he lived with his compatriot and later friend Ayrton Senna in the same house in Egham, Surrey. 1985 won Gugelmin as Senna two years before the British Formula 3 Championship.

Senna tried in sequence to bring Gugelmin to Lotus in Formula 1, but failed due to the approval of the sponsors. Therefore Gugelmin moved with his Formula 3 racing team West Surrey Racing in Formula 3000, but stopped where no success.

For the 1988 season, then the Brazilians got a Formula 1 cockpit in March, where he started alongside Ivan Capelli. He drove a total of 32 races for the British team, which was taken over and renamed the end of 1989 from its Japanese principal sponsor Leyton House. A third place in his home Grand Prix in 1989 in Brazil Gugelmins During this time was the greatest success.

This should not be changed during the years 1990 and 1991. With Leyton House, it was only once, at the Grand Prix of Belgium in 1990, with a sixth place points finish.

In his last season Gugelmin started in 1992 for Jordan. It was a seventh place at the Grand Prix of San Marino his best result, he won no championship points.

Overall Gugelmin recorded at 74 Grand Prix ten championship points and drove once, at the Grand Prix of France in 1989, the fastest lap of the race.

Once in Formula 1 would be unable to detect for the Brazilians, he moved in 1993 into the American IndyCar Series, which partially went to the Champ Car series later. There he drove a total of 147 races, of which he won one until 2001. In 1997, he finished with this win, the fourth overall.
