Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology

The Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology ( MPIIB ) is a research institute of the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (MPG) in Berlin-Mitte and was founded in 1993. Executive Director is currently Dr. Arturo Zychlinsky.

Objects of the Institute

The MPIIB is divided into three sections:

  • The Department of Immunology, headed by Stefan HE Kaufmann, dedicated to various aspects of infection and immunology of tuberculosis and rational vaccine research.
  • The Department of Molecular Biology headed by Thomas F. Meyer and is mainly concerned with the pathogenesis of Chlamydia, Helicobacter, and Neisseria infections with particular emphasis on the molecular mechanisms of the interaction of these pathogens with their host cells and host cell responses. The functional genomics of host cell by RNA interference occupies a special place.
  • The Department of Cellular Microbiology is conducted by Arturo Zychlinsky and deals with various aspects of the interaction of Shigella flexneri with its host cells, and especially of this induced apoptosis.

International Max Planck Research School ( IMPRS )

The Institute ( German: " IMPRS for Infectious Diseases and Immunology " ) at the International Max Planck Research School for Infectious Diseases and Immunology involved in Berlin. The IMPRS is an English doctoral program, which continues to the University of Berlin, Humboldt University of Berlin, the Robert Koch Institute, the German Rheumatism Research Center and the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research are involved. The IMPRS together with the DFG Research Training Group " Genetic and Immunologic Determinants of Pathogen - Wirths Inter - cations " the " ZIBI Graduate School Berlin". The aim of the IMPRS is " a better understanding of host -pathogen interactions at all levels". Speaker of the IMPRS is Arturo Zychlinsky. The program can work with a Dr. rer. nat. or with a Dr. vet. med to be completed.
