Mechtildis of Edelstetten

Mechthild (is) of Unterdießen, Mathilde of Andechs, (* 1125, † May 31 1160 in Diessen ) was the Augustinian canon wife and Abbess of Edelstetten.

Mechthild was the daughter of Count Berthold II of Andechs and sister of Euphemia of Altomuenster. At five years old, she joined the then Kanonissenstift St. Stephen in St. Georgen ( Unterdießen ), where she later became Novice Mistress. 1153 she sent Pope Anastasius IV as abbess in the Abbey Edelstetten. This they should reform, since the state of convent and monastery complex to be desired left. Luckless and ailing them six years later returned to Unterdießen, where she died shortly thereafter.

Even during his lifetime was Mechthild in the reputation of a saint. By 1200, their Vita was written. 1468 was a survey of their bones, and there was a Mechthild cult that is still to be found in the Ammersee region. Your decorated bones are kept in a glass shrine in Marienmunster Unterdießen.

She is invoked as patroness against storms. In the hall of the former collegiate church also a so-called Mechtildisstein is issued, on which the Blessed rested according to tradition. Touching the stone helps the popular belief against headaches.

The feast day of Mechthild in the Order is July 6.
