Mečislovas Reinys

Mečislovas Reinys ( born February 5, 1884 Madagaskaras village, parish Daugailiai region Zarasai, † November 8, 1953 in Vladimir (Russia) ) was Lithuanian clergyman and politician as well as Auxiliary Bishop of Vilnius.

Training

1909 graduated Mečislovas Reinys the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary.

1909-1914 he studied at the University of Leven and Strasbourg.

In 1912 he defended the thesis of philosophy.

Activity

1916-1922 Mečislovas Reinys was lecturer at Vilnius University, and 1922-1924 at the seminary in Kaunas.

1925-1926 was Reinys Foreign Minister of Lithuania.

On April 5, 1926, he was named by Pope Pius XI. Auxiliary Bishop of Vilnius and titular bishop of Tiddi. He received his episcopal consecration on 16 May 1926, the emeritus bishop of Vilnius, Jurgis Matulaitis - Matulevicius. 1940, the honorary title of Archbishop, he was awarded with the Titularerzbistum Cypsela.

On June 12, 1947 Mečislovas Reinys was arrested and interrogated for anti-Soviet activity and fight for rights of believers. After he was convicted and sent as a punishment for 8 years after Vladimir, where he died in 1953 in prison.

Mečislovas Reinys published work in psychology, pedagogy, theology and ethics.

After his death the process of beatification was opened.

Honors

The Lithuanian post office was in January 2009, issuing a special stamp in his honor.
