Medzilaborce

Medzilaborce ( russinisch Меджилабірці / Medschylabirzi; Hungarian Mezőlaborc ) is a town in the far north-eastern Slovakia.

Geography

Medzilaborce is located about 10 kilometers south of the border with Poland (border crossing Radoszyce - Palota ), in the territory of the Low Beskids and was first mentioned in writing in 1557. The designation of Medzilaborce (literally: intermediate Laborec village) refers to the river Laborec, about 10 km from the city which has its source. The region of Medzilaborce has always been one of the poorest in the area. For a long time, there were the Rusyns - a minority whose language is related to the territory of Slovakia close to the Ukrainian, but also has similarities with the Slovak and Polish.

History

Up to 1874 Medzilaborce connection was to the Hungarian Galician railway. Here on September 26, 1915, a severe railway accident occurred: A freight train with 30 tank cars fueled with petroleum fell into a downward slope out of control and drove to a hospital train on. 36 people died.

Economy and infrastructure

Glass and machinery industries have the longest tradition in the town of Medzilaborce.

In the glass industry it was since 1970 the branch of Jablonecké Sklarne with 600 employees was. After privatization, the company was dissolved. Glass LPS leads the 45- year-old tradition of glass industry in Medzilaborce continued and continues to produce the crystal chandelier and grinds crystal pendant.

The city consists of the districts Borov (1971 amalgamated ), Medzilaborce and VYDRAN (1964 amalgamated ).

Resident

The city today has about 6700 inhabitants, according to the census, most Slovaks, Ruthenians 20 %, several percentage Ukrainians and many representatives of the Roma minority. The city belongs to the same district.

Museum of Modern Art

Of particular importance is the Modern Art Museum of the Warhol family, dedicated to Andy Warhol and his art. The Warhol come from the community Miková (7 km northwest of Medzilaborce ). In the museum there are important documents to Andy Warhol and his family. The museum is the only one of its kind in Europe and was founded as the first in the world in 1991. The second is located in Pittsburgh. The documentary " Absolut Warhola " by Polish director Stanislaw Mucha devoted to this museum and the area around Medzilaborce.

Others

In Medzilaborce a military cemetery located on the 350 killed in the First World War soldiers were buried. In 2010, the cemetery with the help of soldiers of the German Bundeswehr and the Slovak armed forces was as well as those in neighboring Čabiny renovated.
